The melody, harmony, lyrics, instruments used, vocals, and even the recording deeply affect the soul of the song. Dönence, recorded in 1981 at İstanbul Gelişim Studio by Barış Manço and Kurtalan Ekspres, is one of those songs. Dönence, whose melody was shaped by the collective work of Kurtalan Ekspres members Celal Güven (Glockenspiel), Nejat Tekdal (Keyboards) and Ahmet Güvenç (Bass Guitar), was finalized with the deep, meaningful lyrics written by Barış Manço. The song, with its heavy influences from Progressive Rock, Electronic Music, and Funk, made a huge impact after its release and has become unforgettable. Now, let’s think about the song for a moment. Where do these unusual sounds we’ve been hearing for years come from? Let’s summarize. The song begins with the chilling glockenspiel melody by Celal Güven. Then, the ARP Omni-2 synthesizer greets the listener with its wonderful string sound. This device, produced by the ARP company between 1977 and 1981, is a polyphonic analog instrument that simulates string and wind instruments. And at this point the Moog Minimoog synthesizer, which forms the basic sound of the song, comes into play and makes a great opening with bass tones. The Minimoog is not just any device It was released in 1969 and fundamentally changed the music world as the first compact commercial analog synthesizer. A monophonic device, the Minimoog has not only powerful bass sounds but also bright treble tones. Thanks to its oscillators and filters, it is possible to create effective sounds. As a footnote. This device was brought to our country from the United Kingdom by Barış Manço upon the request and recommendation of Nejat Tekdal in keyboards. The iconic sound of Dönence is therefore handed over to the amazing tones of the Minimoog, along with the bass guitar, which is the key element of the song. The bass sounds in both the intro and other sections of the song, as well as the main melody, were played using this device. The ARP Omni-2, which we mentioned at the beginning, complements this successful infrastructure in all sections with its legendary string sounds. Dönence is, in this way, a song that has become a symbol in Turkish popular music, where Barış Manço and Kurtalan Ekspres opened a new door in their own music, and electronic keyboard instruments were used very successfully. In the background of the work, there is a successful performance and recording story that was handed over to master hands. At the end of this article, I would like to share with you a little known demo version of Dönence recorded by Nejat Tekdal during rehearsals and released by him in the past years. If you are listening to it for the first time, I am sure you will be quite surprised. Here is Dönence as it is still in its developmental stage. https://youtu.be/NXgUFxM_vGo?si=H1iNxgwKt0xTXPkh Sarp Akbal/Marketing and Corporate Communications Assistant Manager | | Theatre AFIFE“Afife,” brought to life by Demet Evgar's magnificent performance, brings the inspiring life story of Afife Jale, the first female actress in the history of Turkish theater, to the stage.
