Portraits from ATU
Ankara
Can you introduce yourself? What is your name and surname?
Pınar Aysal.
What is your role at ATU Duty Free and what do you do in this role?
I work as a People and Culture Supervisor at ATU Duty Free. My role is to support our employees and the business; to create a positive working environment, to implement people-oriented practices, and to contribute to the development and success of our teams.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I love traveling and experiencing different countries and cultures. Therefore, it is quite difficult for me to give a single answer to this question. There are still too many places I want to see and explore before making a decision. I feel closer to warm, vibrant, and high-energy cultures. The cities of Italy would be a good example of this. In addition to this, I also have a great admiration for Paris. There is something in the city's elegance that makes being there feel special. If I had to make a choice today, I would probably be torn between Italy and Paris, but this is still a rather difficult decision for me.
Is there a characteristic you would like to change about yourself? Why?
I am someone who has high expectations of herself and aims for better in everything she does. Although this perspective sometimes causes me to push myself more than necessary, I have learned over time that improvement is not about being perfect, but about continuously learning and progressing. Striking this balance is still something I am working on.
What is your favorite feature of yourself that you are most proud of?
My proudest trait is my ability to establish sincere and real bonds with people. I truly enjoy getting to know people, understanding their perspectives, and learning what motivates them. Being together with people gives me energy, and I believe that my positive approach and my genuine interest in others help me build strong relationships. Looking back, I see that at the foundation of many successes in both my personal and professional life lies my ability to connect with people and build trust.
What is your greatest fear in life?
Frankly, I don't see myself as someone who has too many fears. I believe that fears are often an obstacle to people's development. Therefore, when faced with a fear, I try to confront it instead of running away from it. I realized over time that often the biggest fear is the scenarios we create in our minds. When we actually live that experience, we see that it is not as scary as we thought and that there is always a way out.
Is there a talent you wish you had?
I wish I could speak many languages fluently without having to study! I love communicating with people from different cultures, and I think being able to connect with a person in their own language is a very special talent.
Who is your favorite historical hero, from the past or present?
The stories of strong women have always inspired me. One of the names that inspires me the most is Estée Lauder. The story of Estée and thousands of women like her who have achieved great success gives me strength and provides motivation to keep moving forward. Starting from scratch, never giving up on her dreams, and building her own beauty empire is one of the aspects I find particularly inspiring about her.
What qualities do you most value in a friend?
Trust and sincerity. I value people with whom I can be myself, laugh a lot, have meaningful conversations, and at the same time comfortably share silence. For me, true friendship is being completely yourself around someone.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?
I would probably like to learn to slow down a bit more. By my nature, I am action-oriented and I like to get things done. However, sometimes the most beautiful moments in life can be the moments we did not plan.
What is your favorite activity to do in your free time?
Traveling and discovering new places. Apart from this, I enjoy doing various sports, spending time in nature, and spending quality time with people I love. I prefer activities that give me energy over activities that simply pass the time.
What is your biggest regret in life?
I don't think I have a major regret. Looking back, there are of course some things I could do differently with my experience today. However, I believe that every decision I made and every difficulty I experienced taught me valuable things and shaped the person I am today.
Can you share with us the place and time where you felt the happiest?
I think happiness is more about who a person is and how they look at life, rather than a specific place or moment. Of course, life has its ups and downs. However, I think that how we start the day and how we approach the difficulties we face are largely in our own hands. For me, happiness is knowing the value of what I have, being able to stay positive, and finding joy in the small moments of daily life wherever I am.
Do you have a slogan or motto that has motivated you throughout your life?
"If someone has done it, I can do it too."
I have always believed that progress begins with believing that something is possible. This perspective gives me the motivation to continue improving myself, accept new challenges, and maintain my resilience when things get tough. It reminds me that progress is possible with effort, learning, and determination.

İstanbul
Can you introduce yourself? What is your name and surname? Batu Sarıan What is your role at ATU Duty Free and what do you do in this role? I am involved in managing logistics operations and related processes at ATU Duty Free. Basically, I deal with the planning, tracking, and coordination of the logistics flow of products from supply points to operation centers and stores. A significant part of my role involves planning international and domestic shipments, coordinating customs and warehouse processes, developing warehouse operations, and monitoring logistics costs and performance. Besides this, I try to contribute to making the processes more efficient and sustainable by working in coordination with operations in different countries, suppliers, and different departments within the company. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? Probably Japan. The way traditional culture and modern life coexist so strongly, along with the sense of order and attention to detail, really appeals to me. Is there a characteristic you would like to change about yourself? Why? I would like to reduce my tendency to overthink everything a bit. Thinking through too many alternatives can sometimes be an advantage, but other times it just opens more tabs in my mind than necessary. What is your favorite feature of yourself that you are most proud of? What I am most proud of is that I keep looking for solutions in difficult situations. When something doesn’t work on the first try, rather than saying ‘it’s not working,’ I think, ‘How else can we make this work?’ I’ve found this especially valuable in my professional life. What is your greatest fear in life? Things I cannot control. We love making plans, but life doesn’t have much respect for them. Is there a talent you wish you had? Definitely mastering time management. Being able to use 24 hours like 30 wouldn’t be bad. Who is your favorite historical hero, from the past or present? Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. I especially admire his leadership, strategic thinking, ability to set long-term goals and drive change, particularly under circumstances that seemed almost impossible. What qualities do you most value in a friend? Reliability, frankness and a sense of humor. Also, someone sincere enough to tell me, ‘I think you’re wrong about this,’ when necessary. Thinking we’re always right would be pretty boring. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why? I would stop second-guessing some of the decisions I’ve made in the past. After a certain point, rather than wondering, ‘What if I had done things differently?’ I think it’s more useful to focus on where I am now and what the next step should be. What is your favorite activity to do in your free time? Spending time in nature and hiking. I particularly enjoy hiking on long-distance trails such as the Lycian Way. Being away from the city and the pace of daily life for a few days and being in nature is one of the best ways for me both to discover new places and to completely clear my mind. Besides this, I also love traveling and discovering different places. What is your biggest regret in life? It is hard to name a single event. More generally, I regret putting certain things off by saying, ‘I’ll do it later.’ You learn a little too late that time really is the one resource you can never get back. Can you share with us the place and time where you felt the happiest? The moments on a trip when I go out early in the morning while everyone is sleeping and discover a new place on my own. Especially when I am in nature. Rather than grand or spectacular moments, I value those few quiet hours when no one needs anything from me and my mind is completely clear Do you have a slogan or motto that has motivated you throughout your life? “Not just good enough, but as good as it should be.” I value this especially in my professional life, as it reminds me of the difference between simply completing a task and doing it really well.

Latvia
Can you introduce yourself? What is your name and surname? My name is Madara Ārenta Uzunosmanoglu. I am one of the creative souls in this company, with a big and pure heart. I am Latvian with plenty of Turkish vibes in my life, a proud mother of two wonderful kids and a loving wife. I was born in Latvia into a very talented family. What is your role at ATU Duty Free and what do you do in this role? I have been part of ATU Duty Free for 14 years now, and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience different sides of the company throughout this journey. I had the honor of starting my career with ATU in Tunisia, working in the Category Department. This gave me a great understanding of the company’s operations and the different processes behind the business. Later, I moved into Corporate Communications, where I had the opportunity to work across all five airports we had at that time. For the past eight years, my journey has continued in Riga, where I have been part of the local operation and built many wonderful memories and relationships. Now, as we are approaching the closure of our Riga operation, I will enter a new chapter with in a new country. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? I consider myself a citizen of the world. After university, I had the opportunity to live in several different countries — Bulgaria, Egypt, and Tunisia, even before ATU Duty Free was there. These experiences taught me that home is not necessarily one particular place. For me, home is wherever I am with the people I love. With my family by my side, I believe I can build a home anywhere in the world. The most important thing is to be surrounded by the people you love. Everything else — the place, the memories and the life you create — can be built along the way. I think this love for living in different countries comes from my deeper roots. My dad lived in Thailand for 18 years, my uncle lived in Ghana, and my great-grandmother emigrated to France. So, perhaps this love of discovering new places and feeling at home around the world is simply in my genes! Is there a characteristic you would like to change about yourself? Why? I would say patience. I’m a person who likes things to happen quickly — when I have an idea or a task, I want to get it done immediately. I’m still learning that sometimes the best things take time, and not everything has to happen right now. What is your favorite feature of yourself that you are most proud of? Caring. I’m proud that I genuinely care about people. Whether it’s my family, colleagues, or friends, when I care about someone, I’m fully there for them. What is your greatest fear in life? The death of people close to me. Is there a talent you wish you had? I wish I had a talent for drawing realistic sketches and portraits directly from memory. Who is your favorite historical hero, from the past or present? I wouldn't pick a celebrity or public figure, but honestly, whenever I see a mother with five children, I genuinely view her as a hero. What qualities do you most value in a friend? For me, a true friend is someone who is honest and trustworthy, someone with whom I can be myself and who doesn’t put their own ego first. These are the values I appreciate most in people, because I believe a strong friendship is built on trust, honesty, and mutual respect. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why? I cry so easily—whether it's seeing elderly people who can’t help themselves, sick children, or even just watching a movie. Sometimes I honestly wish I were a bit more cold-hearted. What is your favorite activity to do in your free time? So, honestly, one of my favorite activities at the moment is simply enjoying a quiet moment in silence with a warm cup of coffee. It sounds very simple, but sometimes it feels like the ultimate luxury. Before having children, I was much more adventurous. I used to dive a lot in the Red Sea, I enjoyed cycling, and, most of all, I loved travelling. Travelling was number one in my life — discovering new countries, cultures, and places has always given me so much energy and inspiration. What is your biggest regret in life? I have no regrets. My life is like a book—maybe I'll write it all down one day. It would begin with my childhood — with summers spent growing up in a castle with my grandfather in a small town called Vecauce. Then there would be the story of how I graduated from university despite a very serious accident. The doctors told me that I might never walk again if I did not recover properly. But I did recover. I graduated, and I walk. After that came my adventures in the Sahara, where I worked as a guide, followed by several years at sea, working as a sailor. There were Baltic Sea storms, unforgettable journeys, unexpected situations, and countless adventures along the way. And, of course, there would be the story of how I met my husband — a story that feels as if it was written by destiny itself. Can you share with us the place and time where you felt the happiest? The Maldives holds such a special place in my heart—it's where we were married 14 years ago, and that day remains an unforgettable moment for me and my husband. Do you have a slogan or motto that has motivated you throughout your life? The best way to predict the future is to create it!
